Gyoza Bar Ann, Emporium, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane

September 21, 2015

Gyoza Bar Ann is a humble Japanese eatery found at Emporium in Fortitude Valley. Although I did think they only sold dumplings and maybe a few this and that, their menu also have a lunch menu which offers a wide variety of obentos. They also have a few Tapas and grilled dishes but do try their Lunch menu if you have time. When we came, it was already past their lunch hours so we decided to just try their normal dishes. It was quite empty with only 2 tables filled when we were there.

'Pork Gyoza' ($12) was just a simple dish placed on top of a hot plate, few slices of onions and spring onions. It's a different technique when serving Gyozas in Japanese restaurants. I tend to find that these Gyozas are fully boiled but then they have a grilled at its base. The trick is to add a bit of water 3/4 of the way of the Gyozas. The taste of the Pork Gyozas weren't anything different to what I have tried elsewhere.
'Seafood Don' ($12) had a combination of scallops, salmon and unagi pieces but I found it to be very much less than what I usually would get when you order this dish. The little slices did not look like a lot nor was it nice in the end as there was way more rice than the meat itself.
The shredded egg was a nice gesture to be added in, but the lack of sauce and lack of seafood just made the whole dish not nice to eat. The salmon and the other seafood pieces were sliced thinly and there were bits of cucumbers and also seaweed but it did not add much to the whole dish. Was quite dissapointed actually with this dish as I had expected better from it.
This roll was their Unagi (Eel) which was a simple rice filled roll topped with shredded egg, mayo and unagi. It was quite small and the Unagi sauce was not strong nor the usual, as it had a more tangy and less rich taste to it.
I found that this place would offer your simple Japanese dishes but it would not be a place I would absolutely recommend to someone if they want Gyozas or Obentoos as there are a nicer and delicious place elsewhere.
